June 14th Saint Of The Day: Saint Elisha

“God is my salvation”: this is the meaning of the name Elisha. We know some hints about his family from the 1 book of Kings, 19,16-19: “Then you will anoint Ieu, son of Nimsi, as king over Israel and you will anoint Elisha, son of Saphat, of Abel-Mecolà, as a prophet in your place ”

Elisha, disciple of Elijah

Disciple of the prophet Elijah whom he succeeded: “Leaving there, Elijah found Elisha, son of Saphat.

He plowed with twelve pairs of oxen in front of him, while he himself drove the twelfth. Elijah, passing by him, threw his cloak over him.

He left the oxen and ran after Elijah, saying to him: “I will go and kiss my father and mother, then I will follow you”.

Elijah said, “Go and come back, because you know what I’ve done for you.”

Moving away from him, Elisha took a couple of oxen and killed them; with the wood from the yoke of the oxen he cooked the meat and gave it to the people to eat.

Then he got up and followed Elijah, entering his service ”.

Before ascending to heaven, Elijah said to Elisha: “Stay here, because the Lord is sending me as far as Bethel”

Elisha replied, “As the Lord lives and as long as you live, I will not leave you…Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you.’

Elisha replied, “Let two-thirds of your spirit be in me.”

He added: “You want something difficult! Be it so with you, if you see me when I am taken away from you; otherwise it won’t happen.”

As they continued walking conversing, behold, a fiery chariot and fiery horses came between them.

Elijah ascended in the whirlwind to heaven.

Elisha looked on and cried out: “My father, my father, chariot of Israel and his steeds!”. And he never saw it again.

Then he grabbed his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

Then he picked up the cloak that had fallen from Elijah, and went back, stopping on the bank of the Jordan.

He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the waters, saying: “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?”

When he too had struck the waters, they divided this way and that, and Elisha crossed over. The sons of the prophets of Jericho saw him face to face and said, “The spirit of Elijah has settled upon Elisha.” They went to meet him and fell on the ground before him” (2 Kings 2:1ff).

The second book of Kings collects the prodigies performed by Elisha, who died in 790 BC. about

The author of the book of Sirach praises him: “As soon as Elijah was enveloped by the whirlwind, Elisha was filled with his spirit; in his days he trembled before no prince and no one could dominate him.

Nothing was too great for him, and in his tomb his body prophesied.

In his life he performed wonders, and after his death wonderful were his works…” (48,12ff).
