Jubilee 2025 ‘Turn Debt into Hope’ campaign

Caritas Internationalis launches the Jubilee 2025 ‘Turn Debt into Hope’ campaign

Caritas Internationalis is initiating the Jubilee 2025 ‘Turn Debt into Hope’ campaign. This initiative, inspired by Pope Francis (World Day of Peace 2025 Message – 11),  is a global appeal advocating for debt justice and transformative financial reforms to restore hope in communities burdened by overwhelming debt.

The world is currently facing a significant yet often overlooked debt crisis. More than 100 countries are grappling with unjust and unsustainable public debt, with 65% held by private lenders, which is hindering, if not entirely obstructing, development and climate initiatives.

Among low-income countries, 60% are approaching debt distress, restricting their capacity to invest in the future of their populations. With debt repayments surpassing expenditures on healthcare and education, 3.3 billion individuals are being deprived of essential services, exacerbating poverty and inequality.

Through the #TurnDebtIntoHope campaign, Caritas is advocating for:

  • The immediate cancellation and restructuring of unjust and unsustainable debts without imposing detrimental economic conditions on the most impoverished.
  • Long-term financial reforms that prioritize the well-being of people and the planet, establishing systems that are equitable, sustainable, and free from exploitative lending practices.
  • The establishment of a global debt framework founded on solidarity and harmony among peoples.

In the spirit of the Jubilee year, Caritas Internationalis calls on people, groups, schools, congregations and organisations to demand debt justice by signing #TurnDebtIntoHope petition to send a clear, united message to global leaders, creditors and decision-makers to act with courage and compassion.
