After Black Friday, comes the Day of Giving

Black Friday, Cyber Monday… These are the expressions that have accompanied us over the past few days. And today? It’s the Day of Giving!

Now in its eighth edition in Italy, World Giving Day also has an English name, but it has nothing to do with marketing.

“GivingTuesday”: that’s the name of the initiative first promoted in 2012 in New York City by the 92nd Street Y Cultural Center, in collaboration with the United Nations. The idea is to make people reflect on the value of giving by initiating solidarity activities and involving people and realities in 100 countries around the world.

In Italy, it is the Philanthropic Foundation AIFR – ETS that is in charge, proposing a series of initiatives to raise awareness and enhance the role of the Third Sector.

After the unbridled shopping rush chasing discounts, then, the marathon of generosity begins, which has the power to transform the world. In fact, even a small gesture can make the world better and become a source of change.

On December 3, people do a wide variety of things: from a simple offering to the gift of their time; from the gift of a smile to sharing their time or things. Everyone, even in their own small way, can be part of this great circuit and give a kind and concrete response to the consumerism that is rampant.

It is an opportunity, in which to sort through a closet of superfluous stuff, to ask ourselves what is really essential, to question the meaning of our continually wanting to buy.

Humanity is going through a difficult phase. Even Nature is rebelling. For this reason, we need to start living in essentiality and selflessly, out of the logic of possession and wanting more and more.

There are so many situations of injustice and social inequality; mercy toward the poorest will be the key to enter another way of thinking and acting.

As it is written in the Acts of the Apostles, “one is more blessed in giving than in receiving.”

What can you do on December 3?

Live GivingTuesday as if it were a holiday and get infected by generosity!

  • Choose a project and support it with a donation
  • Help someone in need
  • Do a good deed
  • Basically, do a work of mercy!
