Volunteering | Giving and receiving love
Luigi tells us about the importance and value of volunteering. He tells us about the kids and a camp in Scampia
(by Luigi Diluca)
The boys who go to Scampia in the summer and winter are very committed, that is, they believe in what they do.
Their mission is to give and receive love to people who need it, for example Roma people.
It is true mission because they not only give but also receive love.
The welcome we received in visiting the shacks has remained in my heart.
This summer I broke my arm playing soccer. This winter I had a heart attack and the Roma families went out of their way to let me know they were praying for me. Once I returned home, Fasila made a point of welcoming me to offer me coffee.
The other mission that has remained in my heart is Lotto P, one of the poorest and most infamous neighborhoods in Scampia. There the children soon recognized us and accepted us in the games.
The mission ahead for summer 2025 is “school” in the sense of helping children with their homework.
The world of Batch P children is too closed and weak, made up of catch phrases and insults against Roma. The study could help them overcome their closure.
It is important for me to participate in the camps because as a volunteer I receive and give love.
I prepare breakfast, participate in the mission with the Roma and Lot P, attend the proposed Testimonies, listen to the young people’s sharing and offer my point of view.
I feel like advising a young person to attend a missionary camp to feel more complete.
When you come back from such experiences, your heart is overflowing with joy. It helps you grow and change.
