Two nuns kidnapped in Nigeria: spazio + spadoni’s prayer

After yet another kidnapping in Nigeria, spazio + spadoni expresses sympathy to the congregation and family members of the two kidnapped nuns

Abducted by armed men two religious sisters of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Nigeria.

Fides Agency broke the news. The abduction took place on the evening of Jan. 7 on the road in Ufuma, Anambra State, in the southeast of the country, as Sister Vincentia Maria Nwankwo and Sister Grace Mariette Okoli were returning from a Vocational Association meeting in Ogboji.

Sister Vincentia is the principal of Archbishop Charles Heerey Memorial Model Secondary School in Ufuma and Sister Grace is a teacher at Immaculata Girls Model Secondary School in Nnewi.

This is the first kidnapping in 2025 in Nigeria, but there are numerous incidents of kidnappings, most often for the purpose of extorting money. Already last year, also in Anambra State, Father Basil Gbuzuo and the pastor of St. Matthew’s Church in Ajalli Christian Ike, and again, Fr. Oliver Buba and Fr. Gabriel Ukeh were kidnapped.

In an article dated June 20, 2024, Vatican News reports the statement of Sister Keni Oluwa, a Pauline living in Lagos, who denounces the involvement of the younger generation by small criminal groups, often related to jihadist factions: “Our children should learn another way of life and acquire a different mentality. Unfortunately, they are led to think that this is the right way to act, but it is not: it is up to us to introduce them to a fairer one”.

As we await more news, space + spadoni joins in prayer with the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the family members of the nuns.
