The Word every day: April 9-15, 2024

Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Tuesday 9

John 3:12-13

“If I have spoken to you of things of the earth and not believe, how can you believe if I speak to you of things of heaven? No one has ever ascended into heaven except He who came down from heaven, the Son of man.”
Only Jesus can speak to us about spiritual realities, about the soul, about heaven. We can doubt the spiritual masters of this world whose teachings arise from human reasoning but not the teachings of Jesus, they come from above, from heaven.

Wednesday 10

John 3:16

“Jesus said to Nicodemus: God loved the world so much that he gave the Only Begotten Son, so that whoever believes in Him should not be lost but have eternal life.”
We were not created for death. God’s love is so great that through Jesus it introduces us into the same life as him which never ends, to the point of making us participate in the same Divinity as him.

Thursday 11

John 3,31.34

“He who comes from heaven is above all. He attests to what he has seen and heard. For he whom God has sent speaks the word of God; without measure He gives the Spirit.”
Through Jesus, God reveals his identity and gives himself to those who welcome him, creating a communion of life that becomes the completeness and full realization of our humanity.

Friday 12

John 6.5

“Then Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming to him and said to Philip: where can we buy bread so that these people can eat?”
Jesus sees the crowds of all times hungry for love and truth, we are also in this crowd, with the gift of the Eucharist he responds to all our expectations of truth and love.

Saturday 13

John 6:19-20

“The disciples saw Jesus walking on the sea and approaching the boat and they were afraid. But He said to them: It is I, do not be afraid.”
When we are in the sea of pain, of illness, of the misfortunes that life reserves for us and fear grips us, Jesus always comes close and if we welcome him He alone gives us comfort, liberation, trust.

Sunday 14

Luke 24,45-46

He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures and said to them: “Thus it is written; Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and in his name conversion and forgiveness of sins will be preached to all peoples.

We cannot correctly understand the Bible with our human criteria, we must pray to the Holy Spirit to open our spiritual intelligence to understand what He wants to communicate to us through His Scriptures.

Monday 15

John 6:28-29

They said “What must we do to do the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God: that you believe in Him whom he has sent.”

The first work in which we must engage is personal conversion to Faith in the Dead and Risen Jesus, from this all other works are born and without this we build on nothing. Faith is the foundation of all our being and doing.
