The Word every day: 8-14 December, 2024
Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini
Sunday 8/12
Luke 1: 28 and 31
Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; and behold, thou shalt conceive a son, and bear him, and shalt call his name Jesus. God conceived Mary to be totally sinless, that is, consecrated to the Kingdom. She is totally available to God’s plan that is manifested in Jesus. Mary is God’s most perfect collaborator in pouring out salvation and mercy on humanity.
Monday 9/12
Luke 5:24
Now that you may know that the son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, I say to you (said to the paralytic) get up, take up your bed and go back to your home. Knowing that there is a God who always forgives, who can remove the burdens caused by our mistakes and give us peace of heart, how can we not surrender ourselves to Him with infinite confidence.
Tuesday 10/12
Matthew 18:14
Thus is the will of your Father who is in heaven, that not one of these little ones should be lost. We are God’s little ones, loved and followed by divine care, even if we take paths that lead us away from Him, He always follows us and never abandons anyone.
Wednesday 11/12
Matthew 11: 28-29B
Jesus said, ‘Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. I am meek and lowly in heart’. When we are particularly in crisis, disappointed or confused because of failures, or weary from the stresses of life, only the meekness and goodness of a friendly person can lift us up.
Thursday 12/12
Matthew 11:11
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist, but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he’. Jesus gives great dignity to those who accept the Gospel as the norm of life, so that they are even greater than the greatest of the prophets.
Friday 13/12
Matthew 11: 18-19
John has come who does not eat or drink and they say ‘he is possessed’. The Son of Man has come who eats and drinks and they say ‘behold a glutton and a drunkard’. The Lord points out right and healthy lifestyles for us, but starvation, conceit, superficiality lead us to evade these indications because evil always and always resists good.
Saturday 14/12
Matthew 17:12
Elijah has already come and they did not recognise him, rather they did with him what they wanted, so also the Son of Man will have to suffer at their hands. In every age, those are always eliminated whose testimony of life and whose word is inconvenient and counteracts the plans of the corrupt and the bullies.
