The Word every day: 6-12 October, 2024

Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday 6/10

Mark 10: 7-8

Therefore the man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Thus they are no longer two, but one flesh. Sacramental marriage is the realisation of the human being. It results from the union of male and female. If this division is broken or theorised, dehumanisation takes place, producing social and existential disorder and confusion.

Monday 7/10

Luke 10:29

But the one wanting to justify himself said to Jesus: ‘And who is my neighbour?’. Let us often ask ourselves who is my neighbour in the situation we are living. My neighbour is the one who needs me, the one who cannot get out of a difficulty by himself, the one who is left alone to his sorrow.

Tuesday 8/10

Luke 10: 41-42

The Lord answered her: ‘Martha Martha you fret and fret about many things, but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the best part that will not be taken away from her.
What is needed most of all is to learn to be with Jesus, heart to heart, in silence, listening to him and contemplating his word. In this way we anticipate what we will be for all eternity.

Wednesday 9/10

Luke 11: 1-2

One of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples. And he said to them, ‘When you pray say: Father’.
Already addressing God calling him father with affection and loving consideration is already an essential prayer. God is glorified when we give him our trust and confidence, when we open our hearts to him more than our lips.

Thursday 10/10

Luke 11:13

If you therefore who are evil know how to give good things to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the holy spirit to those who ask him.
God wanted each one of us and gave us life, not only that but he also wants to give us his own life that comes to us through the Holy Spirit. He does not impose it on us but proposes it and with prayer if we want it he gives it to us.

Friday 11/10

Luke 11:24

When the unclean spirit comes out of a man he wanders about in deserted places seeking relief and finding none he says, ‘I will return to the house from which I came out’.
As long as we are on this earth we must be vigilant, always striving, for the evil spirit gives no respite, persecutes and wants to conquer our freedom, for it cannot bear free and happy men in the Holy Spirit.

Saturday 12/10

Luke 11:28

Jesus said to them: ‘Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it’. Blessed means happy. True happiness is inner and is reflected in a bright and serene face. Happy are those who live by keeping God’s word.
