The Word every day: 5-11 January, 2025

Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday 5/01

John 1:16

From his fullness we have all received: grace upon grace.
Despite our remoteness and our condition as sinners, the Lord fills us with love and kindness to lead us to live as his children in justice and truth.

Monday 6/01 Solemnity of the Epiphany

Matthew 2:11

The Magi entered the house, saw the child with Mary his mother, prostrated themselves and adored him.
The Magi are able to adore because they have sought, they have set out, they have come out of their own selves, they have decentralised themselves from themselves, from their ties, only when these steps are taken can one adore Jesus. To adore is to recognise that there is someone higher than us and a multitude of brothers and sisters before us.

Tuesday 7/01

Matthew 4:17

Jesus began to preach and to say: ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand’.
If we confront Jesus, if we confront ourselves with the gospel, we must have the courage to always question ourselves, to revise our positions.

Wednesday 8/01

Mark 6:34

Jesus saw a great crowd, had compassion on them, and began to teach them many things.
Jesus suffers with us, He accompanies us and takes care of our moral and material miseries, we must entrust ourselves to Him putting everything in His hands and He will be able to act.

Thursday 9/01

Mark 6:48

But Jesus seeing them weary in rowing, because they had the wind against them, at the end of the night he came to them walking on the sea. When our strength fails and when we are at the limit of situations that is the moment to welcome Jesus who always passes by us, that is the moment of humility, of surrender to Him.

Friday 10/01

Luke 4:14

Jesus returned to Galilee with the power of the Spirit and his fame spread throughout the region.
Galilee is the symbol of the godless world, the pagan world, in which Jesus is present today and works with the power of the Holy Spirit through the sacraments and the preaching of the Church.

Saturday 11/01

Luke 5: 12-13

Jesus was in a city, behold a man covered with leprosy saw him and threw himself before him. Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, ‘I want you to be cleansed.
If we want it, Jesus touches the worst of the worst of our miseries and where He touches brings healing and forgiveness.
