The Word every day: 4-10 August, 2024
Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini
Sunday 4/08
John 6:27
Jesus said, “Give not for the food that does not last, but for the food that remains for eternal life, which the son of man will give you.” This food that Jesus is talking about is the Eucharist. We run from so many places, we worry about so many things, but if we understood that in the Eucharist, Jesus comes to love in us, to live in us, and already brings us eternal life, the Mass would become the most important thing in every day.
Monday 5/08
Matthew 3:13
At that time Jesus departed from there in a boat and withdrew to a deserted place in the background. How regenerating is silence and solitude spent in contemplation with Jesus? The confusion and the many words of the media alienate us from our true being and deprive us of our thinking, and unwittingly we are colonized by those who want to rob us of the truth of ourselves and reality.
Tuesday 6/08
Mark 9:5
Taking the Word, Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here, let us make three huts, one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah.” It is really good to be with Jesus. We can have the same experience as Peter, when we are silent before the Eucharist, Jesus speaks to us with great peace, makes us aware of our emptinesses, wounds, and gently heals and consoles.
Wednesday 7/08
Matthew 15:28
Jesus replied to her, “Woman, great is your faith; let it happen for you as you wish.” And from that instant her daughter was healed. We expect miracles and interventions from God for our misfortunes, but in reality it is the faith we possess that causes the changes, the healings, because faith always moves divine intervention on our behalf more than supplications.
Thursday 8/08
Matthew 16:15
Jesus said to them, “But you, who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Let us ask ourselves, who is Jesus to me, what kind of relationship do I have with him? What meaning do his words and teachings have? Is he just a divine being who stays away, or someone who challenges and provokes me by changing my life?
Friday 9/08
Matthew 16:24
Jesus said, “If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Jesus does not impose, but proposes. If we decide to walk with him on the road of existence, we will feel that the burden of selfishness becomes unbearable and we will prefer to live with trust and abandonment, knowing that Jesus will not fail us with anything.
Saturday 10/08
Matthew 17:19-20
The disciples approached Jesus on the sidelines and asked him, “Why have we failed to cast out the devil?” Because of your little faith. Faith is the great gift that the Lord wants to give to everyone, giving it freely. With faith all kinds of evil are driven away, because it puts us in communion with God and with all those in heaven and on earth who live in faith, which is why faith is powerful.
