Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday, 30/06

Mark 5:22-21

And there came one of the leaders of the synagogue and pleaded with him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying: come and lay your hands on her, that she may be saved and live.” He went with him. The Lord always accompanies us on our existential journey. His presence becomes more vivid and significant in difficult times and trials, however, it is our spiritual sensitivity and prayer that provoke His beneficial and liberating action.

Monday, 1/07

Matthew 8:19-20

A scribe came to him and said, I will follow you wherever you go. Jesus answered him, The foxes have their dens and the birds of the air their nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head. To follow Jesus more closely is to find in Him alone that security normally found in human realities and institutions . He gives us an inner stability that far surpasses all social security and parental affectivity.

Tuesday, 2/07

Matthew 8:27

All filled with amazement said, Who is this that even the winds and the sea obey him? Jesus’ divinity is hidden by his poor humanity, but he always remains God, clothed in humility he rules the world. Even today hidden from our eyes, everything is placed under his feet. Recognizing Jesus’ lordship over everything is the beginning of our eternal salvation.

Wednesday, 3/07

Matthew 8:28-29

In the country of the Gadarenes two possessed men went to meet Jesus, they were so furious, they cried out :” What do you want from us , Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time? The time when Satan is dethroned begins with the Death and Resurrection of Jesus , he will no longer be the ruler of the world. Today he is more furious than ever because his end has already been set and this one is approaching , let us resist his deceptions and seductions with intense prayer.

Thursday, 4/07

Matthew 9:5-7

For what is easier : Are your sins forgiven, or to say get up and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins. Get up ,he said to the paralytic, take up your little bed and go to your house. And he got up and went to his house. Only Jesus has the power to forgive sins and he passed it on to the apostles and their successors, so let us never be discouraged ,if we have sinned let us go and receive forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation. The Lord never tires of forgiveness.

Friday, 5/7

Matthew 9:9

Jesus saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth , and he said to him : follow me . And he got up and followed him . Even today Jesus calls and his calls are unpredictable , he calls everyone , either to conversion , or to follow him in a consecrated life , or to a mission or in volunteer work . He is always calling and when we answer we find our true identity and absolute joy. The Christian life is nothing but a response .

Saturday, 6/07

Matthew 9:17

Neither do you pour new wine into old wineskins, otherwise the wineskins will split and the wine will spill out and the wineskins will be lost. But new wine is poured into new wineskins. Old wineskins are those who want to save themselves from themselves, and old wine is self-righteousness. New wineskins are those who get saved by the Lord and the Holy Spirit is the new wine that transforms and changes the lives of those who get molded by Him.
