The Word every day: 3-9 November, 2024

Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday 3/11

Mark 12: 30-31

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. You shall love your neighbour as yourself. Love is unique; when you do not love others, you do not even love God. We must learn to make God love us. Thus filled with this love we can love all creatures without difficulty.

Monday 4/11

Luke 14:13

Jesus said: ‘When you offer a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed because they have no need to repay you. Living relationships with others with selflessness and gratuitousness is the secret to being free, serene, and unpretentious.

Tuesday 5/11

Luke 14:23

The master said to the servant: ‘Go out into the streets and along the hedges, compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled’. God’s magnanimity is so great and generous that he desires to bestow his fellowship and goods of holiness on all. but few are those who appreciate and are enriched by God’s gifts.

Wednesday 6/11

Luke 14:27

He who does not bear his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. When we understand that Jesus is the truth and is not an idea but a living person who stands beside us on our journey, we cannot but have total dedication for him.

Thursday 7/11

Luke 15:7

I say to you, ‘Thus there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who is converted than over 99 righteous ones who have no need of conversion. God’s untiring mercy is inexhaustible. It is not so much man who seeks God, rather it is God who does not rest until he finds man and brings him to salvation.

Friday 8/11

Luke 16:8

Jesus said, ‘For the children of this world are shrewder toward their own kind than the children of light. Just as one is shrewd in the administration of material goods, so must one be shrewd in those things that concern the spreading of the kingdom of God. Shrewdness does not mean dishonesty.

Saturday 9/11

Luke 16:9

Jesus said: ‘Make friends of dishonest wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into eternal dwellings. Money is not to be our master, but our servant, whom we use for love. Thus it opens the way to heaven for us. Money is not good or bad, it depends on how we use it.
