The Word every day: 29 September-5 October, 2024
Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini
Sunday 29/09
Mark 9:40
At that time Jesus said: ‘Whoever is not against us is for us’.
There are people who, although not avowedly Christian, work for the good of humanity, are builders of justice and peace, in the honesty of a good life contribute to the realisation of the Kingdom of God, and without wanting to, are in His service.
Monday 30/09
Luke 9:48
Jesus said: ‘Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me’.
The simple and the small can contain the greatness of God, therefore when one welcomes oneself one welcomes the Lord, the more simple and humble one is the more he becomes a bearer of God.
Tuesday 1/10
Luke 9:62
Jesus answered, ‘No one who puts his hand to the plough and then turns back is fit for the kingdom of God.
One cannot live with regrets, with nostalgia, with the past in whatever way it was lived, what matters is today.
‘I have only today to love’ said St Theresa.
Wednesday 2/10
Matthew 18:10
See that you do not despise a single one of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
The little ones are the insignificant people whom the world ignores and does not protect, but God with his Angels is their protector. The Angels are the hand of the Father who always accompanies us.
Thursday 3/10
Luke 10:2
He said to them: ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few! Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest, that he may send out labourers into his harvest’.
The Lord always calls, and many, but few feel like labourers, most feel like entrepreneurs and want to work for themselves, they do not want to be employees but masters.
Friday 4/10
Matthew 11:25
Jesus said: ‘I give praise to you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and revealed them to the little ones.
On whom is the immensity of God poured out? On those who are empty of themselves, on those who accept their meagreness, on those who consider themselves nothing before the Lord, on those who do not trust in his power and his possessions. God fills that which is empty.
Saturday 5/10
Luke 10:19
Jesus said to them, ‘Behold, I have given you power to walk over serpents and scorpions and over all the powers of the enemy; nothing can harm you.
Each of us is most precious to God, so He always gives us His Grace, which alone defends us from the infernal enemy; it is an invincible armour. Let us cultivate God’s Grace and the enemy will flee from us.
