Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday 2/03

Luke 6:45b

Jesus said, ‘For the mouth expresses what overflows from the heart. Let us keep our hearts free from grudges, malice, lustful desires, envy, and fill them with the Holy Spirit, so our mouths will be able to give positive words for everyone.

Monday 3/03

Mark 10:17

A man asked Jesus, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ Of all possible inheritances, the truest and most necessary is eternal life. Do we care enough to have it?

Tuesday 4/03

Mark 10:31

Jesus said, ‘Many of the first will be last and the last will be first. Our earthly order will be reversed in the life to come. Therefore, let us prepare ourselves now by cultivating humility and obedience to the gospel.

Wednesday 5/03

Ash

Matthew 6:1

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Be careful not to practise your righteousness before men in order to be admired by them. The ostentation of good works and self-referentiality diminish the value of the good we do and empty the prophetic potential they might have.

Thursday 6/03

Luke 9:25

For what good is a man who gains the whole world but loses or ruins himself? A man is ruined by sin and lost when he does not acknowledge God, excludes Him, and mocks the way of faith that He opens before us.

Friday 7/03

Matthew 9:15b

But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away, and then they will fast. Today is the time of fasting, a time to detach ourselves from habits that lead to sin, from relativism and the consumerist mentality, and from all forms of individualism.

Saturday 8/03

Luke 5:32

I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to conversion. In Jesus’ mission, sinners are the privileged ones, they are the category he cares most about, God’s plan is to offer everyone the chance to be saved.
