The Word every day: 16-22 February, 2025

Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday 16/02

Luke 6:23

Rejoice in that day and exult, for behold your reward is great in heaven. Our existence does not end on this earth; the fulfilment of all that we have experienced will come later. Afterwards all the expectations, the aspirations that have blossomed here will be realised.

Monday 17/02

Mark 8:12

Why does this generation ask for a sign? Verily I say unto you, unto this generation shall no sign be given. In faith, one should not cultivate reassuring claims on the Lord, but assume an attitude of humility and trust in his mercy.

Tuesday 18/02

Mark 8:15

Beware, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod. The leaven is thoughts and ideas. Let us not plan only according to ourselves and our own interests,
but in the light of God’s word.

Wednesday 19/02

Mark 8: 23 and 25

Then he took the blind man by the hand, led him out of the village, laid his hands on his eyes again, and he saw. To believe is to allow Jesus to take us by the hand and heal us from the materialism that does not allow us to see beyond our limitations.

Thursday 20/02

Mark 8:31

And he began to teach them that the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and after three days rise again. As with Jesus, there will be or is a Good Friday for us. Let us face it with Him and all suffering is sublimated and overcome with hope.

Friday 21/02

Mark 8:35

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. Life is saved when one gives it in charity in the service of God and one’s brothers, otherwise it will be an empty, insignificant, lost life.

Saturday 22/02

Mark 9:2

Jesus took with him Peter, James and John and led them up a high mountain, apart, them alone. If we want to understand the mystery of Christ, we must always find time to be alone with Him. He is present everywhere and to those who seek Him with their hearts in silence He makes Himself known.
