The Word every day: 15-21 September, 2024

Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday 15/09

Mark 8:29

At that time Jesus asked them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter answered him: ‘You are the Christ!’. Let us also ask ourselves: ‘Who is Jesus for me? What kind of relationship am I living with Him? What place does He have in my life?’.

Monday 16/09

Luke 7:3

A centurion having heard about Jesus sent him some elders of the Jews to beg him to come and save his servant. Jesus is the Saviour of all mankind and whoever calls upon him, even if he is an atheist or a non-Christian, he listens to all and goes out to all, regardless of the religion or ethnicity to which he belongs.

Tuesday 17/09

Luke 3:12-13

A dead man was brought to the tomb, the only son of a widowed mother. Seeing her, the Lord was moved with great compassion for her and said to her, ‘Do not weep. He said to the boy: ‘I say to you, get up!’. Let us contemplate the tenderness and compassion of Jesus. Let us never hesitate to expose our sins, our miseries, our despairs, our sorrows to the Lord. Jesus, in his goodness, always wipes away our tears and lifts us up, giving us new hope.

Wednesday 18/09

Luke 7:33-34

For John the Baptist has come who does not eat bread or drink wine, and you say: he is possessed. For the son of man has come who eats and drinks, and you say: he is a glutton and a drunkard. Indifference is worse than atheism, remaining indifferent to the words of the Gospel locks us in ourselves in the greatest mediocrity.

Thursday 19/09

Luke 7:47B

At that time Jesus said: ‘But he to whom one forgives little, he loves little’. To forgive is to disregard the evil received and move on. But it is also to induce the person forgiven to love and do likewise. Forgiveness is always educational.

Friday 20/09

Luke 8:1

Jesus went about the towns and villages preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. There were with him twelve and some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities. Jesus was not a solitary preacher but worked communally. Even today, the one who evangelises is the community, with all its components, both the most virtuous and the most defective. We must learn to make community in order to evangelise.

Saturday 21/09

Luke 8:15

Good soil are those who after hearing the word with a whole and good heart keep it and produce fruit with perseverance. The word of God has enormous generative power. Once received with joy it changes lives and feelings. It gives us wisdom and spiritual knowledge that one would not learn through any other book.
