The Word every day: 14-20 July, 2024

Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini

Sunday, 14/07

Mark 6:8

Jesus called the 12 to Himself and commanded them to take nothing for the journey but a staff, no bread, no sack, and no money in their belts.
The Lord invites us on our earthly journey not to trust too much in material things, but above all to trust in God’s fatherhood, his Providence, combined with honest work. This will give us serenity and peace.

Monday, 15/07

Matthew 10:34

Jesus said to his apostles,:“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have come to bring not peace, but a sword.”
The Christian life is a fight against the spirit of evil, from which wars, violence and injustice arise. It is a radical warfare against the enemy of humanity that is fought with the sword of God’s Word and His Wisdom.

Tuesday, 16/07

Matthew 11:20

At that time Jesus began to rebuke the cities into which most of his wonders had come, because they had not been converted. It is not the extraordinary events that convert to God, but the awareness of our personal limitedness and disillusionment about the presumptions of worldliness.

Wednesday, 17/07

Matthew 11:25

At that time Jesus said: “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. For you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and revealed them to the little ones.”
The Wisdom of the Gospel that gives a right way of life is acquired not through erudition but with an open and willing heart, full of trust in the Father and obedient to his will.

Thursday, 18/07

Matthew 11:29

At that time Jesus said: “Take my game over you and learn from me, who am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your life.”
Taking Jesus’ game means walking beside Him.
Taking His step.
To think with His thoughts, to breathe His love.
We will never be alone in carrying the burdens of life.

Friday, 19/07

Matthew 12

At that time Jesus said: “Mercy, I want and not sacrifices. You would not have condemned blameless people.”
We give praise to God when we sacrifice our selfishness and use mercy to our neighbor.
And by exercising the sharing of goods with those who are in the greatest need.

Saturday, 20/07

Matthew 12

At that time the Pharisees went out and held counsel against Jesus to put him to death. Jesus, however, having heard, departed from there.
Jesus is the righteous persecuted, today as in his time. When you live in truth, you stir up the anger and wickedness of those who use all means to advance their own interests and power.
