The Word every day: 12-18 January, 2025
Commentary on the Readings of the Day by Father Giordano Favillini
Sunday 12/01
Luke 3:20
John said: ‘He will baptise you in the Holy Spirit and fire’. The Holy Spirit is a fire that melts the old man and pours the molten material into Jesus who is the mould in which a new man is rebuilt. Baptism does this.
Monday 13/01
Mark 1:14
Jesus went into Galilee proclaiming the Gospel of God and said: ‘The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand’. God has said it all in Jesus, now it only remains to transform this world, to make it his world, a world permeated completely by love.
Tuesday 14/01
Mark 1:23
There was a man possessed by an unclean spirit. He began to cry out, saying, ‘What do you want of us, Jesus of Nazareth? You have come to ruin us’. Jesus ruins all the plans of the perverters, the violent, the dishonest, the counterfeiters, and those who do not love mankind; he is the only one who can stop the author of all the evil in the world with sum, authority, and strength
Wednesday 15/01
Mark 1:35
Early in the morning he got up when it was still dark and went out to a deserted place and prayed there. Silence and solitude are the two conditions for listening to the risen and living Christ who speaks in the hearts of those who seek him.
Thursday 16/01
Mark 1:45
Jesus stood outside in deserted places and they came to him from all sides. Those who believe in the Gospel and live it do not need to go looking for people to convert them. They are driven by a mysterious call to those who witness Jesus.
Friday 17/01
Mark 2:1
It came to pass that Jesus was in the house, and so many people gathered that there was not even room at the door, and he proclaimed the word to them. Whoever desires beauty, goodness and truth can only go to Jesus, only He can make them flourish in us.
Saturday 18/01
Mark 2:17
Jesus said: ‘I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners’. Between Jesus and sinners there is not the inhuman relationship of the dictator but that of the doctor with the sick.
