The pearls of the jubilee 2025
Receiving indulgence at sea
The Amerigo Vespucci, considered to be one of the most beautiful ships in the world, has been designated as a ‘Jubilee Church’ for the Holy Year 2025. The decision was taken by Mgr Santo Marcianò, Archbishop of the Military Ordinariate of Italy. This training ship of the Italian Navy will will allow its sailors and pilgrims to obtain a plenary indulgence by visiting the ship during its stopovers.
Flagship of Italian culture
The three-masted schooner, which has been sailing around the world since July 2023, has already visited a number of ports on five continents, including Los Angeles, Tokyo, Mumbai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and Marseille. Acting as an ambassador for Unesco and Unicef to raise public awareness of environmental protection and present the values of Italian history and culture, the ship is expected to return to Italian waters in March 2025.
God can be found everywhere
Despite the absence of a dedicated chapel on board, mass is celebrated by the ship’s chaplain, Don Mauro Medaglini, on the aft deck, weather permitting, or in an interior atrium. This ‘jubilee church’ at sea underlines the Church’s commitment to spiritually accompany seafarers and visitors throughout this jubilee year 2025.
All invited to be pilgrims of hope…
