What does an African child dream about?
We will find out in this new column, by Xaverian missionary Father Oliviero Ferro

And when we understand that dreams (but not rights and possibilities) are the same as those of our children, it will be time to wake up and perform works of mercy.

Because through them, an African child (and others) will be able to live in the joy of being able to dream of something that can become possible

I was walking past a house in the village when I see a group of children squatting on the ground.

They are silent. Only their hands and mouths are moving quickly. I greet them sympathetically. They look at me but do not respond. They are too busy sharing the rice in the large bowl.

A few more moments of patience and it is all over. They pass some water to each other and then smile contentedly. I look at them again. There are those who are older, but there are also the little ones. But everyone has been able to eat their rice. Of course it is not much, it does not quench hunger, but it strengthens friendship, sharing.

Someone who was coming like me at that moment asks if there is anything left. Unfortunately, he arrived late. But the older one tells him to wait. He goes to Mom and asks her if there is any rice for the new friend who has arrived. She doesn’t let him say it twice. From the big pot, she takes a few spoonfuls of rice and puts it in a bowl, telling him to take it to his friend. But then to be out of sight; she has to eat, too.

And the new friend takes his place in the circle, eating. The others look at him with envy. They would like to party with him, but they realize he has a right to eat. He is a new friend, and this is the first thing to do: to share food, what you have with anyone who knocks on the door of our heart. This is also a dream to be realized.
