What does an African child dream about?
We will find out in this new column, by Xaverian missionary Father Oliviero Ferro

And when we understand that dreams (but not rights and possibilities) are the same as those of our children, it will be time to wake up and perform works of mercy.

Because through them, an African child (and others) will be able to live in the joy of being able to dream of something that can become possible

The day of National Day has finally arrived. There is no school, but all the schoolchildren must be ready to parade in the main square of the city.

Since morning, they are there, already tired and sweaty. The sun also wanted to be there and it can be felt.

After the usual speeches by the Governor and other dignitaries, the Band begins to play….and will not stop until the end of the parade. And so, starting with the Law Enforcement, to the soldiers. Continuing with the schools (from elementary
through high school), followed by political parties to associations of all kinds to the Red Cross and scouts: all go out to take the applause of the people, thronged along the main street.

The authorities, on the other hand, are well shielded from the sun’s rays under large tents.

All around is a flourish of stalls. Some sell ice cream, some sell candy, sandwiches, sweets, soft drinks. Others, however, specialize
in toys, especially balloons. Then there is always some huckster wizard who is there with his beasts to fool the gullible.

In short, the party is big. And children sneak in everywhere, paying attention to the Law Enforcement Officers who try to make
so that the parade can run smoothly.

There is a risk of catching a few blows from sticks or belts. Poor guys, they were told to do that and they try to do the best they can.

Then, when the parade is over, everyone goes around. Some people watch, some people take pictures, and some people get to eat something.

The party lasts the whole day. You have to take advantage of it, because tomorrow school starts again.

And in the evening, when the children return home, how many things will they have to tell, and slowly they will fall asleep, dreaming that the party continues….
