What does an African child dream about?
We will find out in this new column, by Xaverian missionary Father Oliviero Ferro

And when we understand that dreams (but not rights and possibilities) are the same as those of our children, it will be time to wake up and perform works of mercy.

Because through them, an African child (and others) will be able to live in the joy of being able to dream of something that can become possible

Passing by a house, I saw a mother holding a baby.

I ask her what is going on, since children are usually always on the move. She tells me that her son is sick, has malaria and she has to take him to the dispensary (small hospital).

I offer to accompany her. She is happy that someone cares about her and her child.

When we get to the dispensary, there are already many people waiting in line for their turn. I tell Mama that when she is done, she can come and see me to let me know what the nun doctor said.

After a few hours, Mother Furaha (joy) comes knocking on my door. She tells me that they have prescribed medicine for her, but she cannot pay for all of it. I tell her not to worry that with money from friends from Italy we would help her out.
I write down on a piece of paper what I promised her and she goes off all happy to get the medicine.

After a few days, I am told that someone has come looking for me. Who could it be but Mother Furaha who brings her
Makelele (confusion) to show me that he is cured.

But it doesn’t end there. Four eggs peek out from behind her pagne (dress). He tells me to take them and make me an omelet.

It’s her way of saying thank you.

I helped her fulfill her child’s dream of being a good health.

Sure enough, when I pass by her house, I will see Makelele scampering around the yard. And she will begin to tell me, like all mothers, that her little son makes her despair. She is happy to see him like this, though.

Moms are always full of love and … patience. They are the ones who turned a dream of love into reality.
