The Saint and Mission
St. Anthony Mary Zechariah is a figure of great importance in the history of the Church, known for his reforming fervor and for the foundation of the Orders of the Barnabites and the Angelicas of Saint Paul. Born in 1502 in Cremona, he dedicated his life to the spiritual and moral renewal of the clergy and laity. His mission was aimed at reawakening an authentic and fervent faith in a period in which the Church was going through many difficulties. Ordained as a priest, Antonio Maria Zaccaria dedicated himself passionately to preaching and confession, trying to inspire a return to the simplicity and purity of the Gospel. His preaching was characterized by a strong call to penance and conversion, inviting the faithful to live a more intense and authentic Christian life. He firmly believed that the renewal of the Church had to start from personal holiness and spiritual formation. He founded the Congregation of the Clerics Regular of Saint Paul, known as Barnabites, with the aim of creating a religious community dedicated to preaching, education and care for the poor. His work with the Barnabites led to a reinvigoration of parish life and greater attention to the education of young people. Furthermore, he founded the order of the Angelicas of San Paolo, a group of consecrated women dedicated to prayer and charity. His mission was marked by a deep commitment to spiritual reform, seeking to instill a new spirit of devotion and service in the Church. His legacy continues to live on through the works of the Barnabites and the Angelicas, who still today work throughout the world to promote education, charity and faith. Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria reminds us that the Christian mission is a continuous invitation to conversion and renewal. His life and work are an example of how spiritual fervor and concrete commitment can transform communities and strengthen the Church.

His life was dedicated to reawakening a living and authentic faith in the hearts of the faithful, pushing them towards penance and conversion. His mercy was manifested in his tireless dedication to preaching and confession, always offering words of comfort and hope. Founding the Barnabites and the Angelicas of San Paolo, Antonio Maria Zaccaria created communities of consecrated men and women who worked tirelessly to educate, care for and assist the poor and marginalized. This daily commitment to the least reflected a deep compassion and a desire to alleviate the suffering of others, following the example of Christ. His ability to see the need for spiritual renewal in the Church and to respond with concrete actions demonstrates a mercy that goes beyond words. His attention to the spiritual and moral formation of young people was an act of love and hope for the future of the Church. His life of intense prayer and service to others continues to inspire many to live with mercy, compassion and dedication. The Congregation of Clerics Regular of Saint Paul
The Congregation of Clerics Regular of Saint Paul, known as Barnabites, is a religious order founded by St. Anthony Mary Zechariah in the 16th century. Its birth responded to an urgent need for spiritual and moral renewal within the Church, in a period marked by profound transformations and challenges. The Barnabites immediately distinguished themselves for their fervent commitment to preaching, education and pastoral care. The inspiration of Saint Anthony Maria Zaccaria was to create a community of priests dedicated not only to the contemplative life but also to concrete action in society. This commitment was manifested in their active presence in parishes, schools and charitable works. Their mission was to reawaken faith in people’s hearts, promoting an authentic and committed Christian life. The Barnabites were among the first to understand the importance of education as a tool for reform and human advancement. Their schools became centers of not only academic but also spiritual excellence, where young people could receive a comprehensive education. This approach has helped to form generations of faithful who have carried forward the values of the Gospel in their daily lives. In addition to education, the Barnabites also dedicated themselves to caring for the poor and marginalized, reflecting the mercy and compassion that were at the heart of their founder’s charism. Their ability to combine a life of prayer with social action meant that they became a point of reference for anyone looking for a concrete way to live their faith. The Congregation of the Clerics Regular of Saint Paul continues to be a living and dynamic presence in the Church, carrying forward the legacy of Saint Anthony Maria Zaccaria with the same spirit of dedication and service that characterized the early years of their foundation. Their work testifies that spiritual and moral renewal is a continuous process, which requires commitment, faith and deep attention to the needs of others.

Having understood that God wanted him to be a doctor of souls rather than bodies, he devoted himself to the study of theology. In the meantime he often visited the sick, taught catechism to children, encouraged young people and…
