“Pope Francis is an Ambassador of Mercy,” the Words of the Archbishop of Singapore
The archbishop of the Asian city-state takes stock of the Pope’s visit, highlighting his message of harmony and inclusiveness and the people’s emotion at being able to meet him
“The Pope’s key-messages are always about building harmony in the world, being inclusive and making the Church a sacrament of Jesus’ mercy and compassion toward others.” Cardinal William Seng Chye Goh, archbishop of Singapore, offered this summary of Pope Francis’ three-day apostolic trip to the Asian city-state. Speaking with Vatican media, the cardinal stressed that the pontiff’s visit to the “city of the lion” – which took place Sept. 11-13 and was the last leg of the 45th international apostolic journey that also took Francis, from Sept. 2 onward, to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste – “was inspiring, not only for the citizens of Singapore,” but also for “the need to reach out to all humanity” with the Good News. Indeed, in Singapore and around the world, the archbishop explains, “the Holy Father’s messages constantly resonate,” in which he reiterates attention to “the marginalized, the poor, the suffering, the vulnerable, respect for other religions, the dignity of life, the protection of the family and the young, respect for the young and the encouragement of the young to be adventurous, not forgetting the elderly.”
