Centuries of Faith: The Catholic Diocese of Sunyani’s Triumphant Celebrations

In the vibrant Bono Region of Ghana, the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani recently resonated with joy as it marked three significant milestones over the weekend. The centenary anniversaries of Catholicism in the area, the Golden Jubilee of the Diocese’s establishment, and the 20th Episcopal Anniversary of the Bishop were celebrated in a grand ceremony attended by dignitaries and hundreds of faithful.

Renewing Commitment: Arise! Let us Build the Lord’s Church

During the well-attended Mass, Bishop Joseph Osei-Bonsu, from the Konongo-Mampong Diocese, delivered a powerful sermon. Clad in jubilee attire, the congregation was urged to rededicate themselves to the values of the Church and resist the temptations of the flesh. Under the theme “Arise! Let us Build the Lord’s Church,” Bishop Osei-Bonsu called for a renewed commitment to building a diocese radiating love in its mission, inviting others to join its vibrant community.

Divine Message and Praises

Archbishop Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, presided over the Mass, conveying the Holy Father’s congratulatory message. The representative of Ghana’s President, Mr. Agyeman Manu, praised the Church for its vital role in the nation’s development. Former President John Dramani Mahama also commended the Catholic Church for its contributions to education, healthcare, and human development over the years.

A Journey of Growth: Sunyani Diocese’s Impressive Statistics

The Ordinary of Sunyani Diocese, Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, expressed gratitude for Pope Francis’s message and commended all participants. The diocese, rooted in the life of the people, witnessed a historic moment in 1923 when the Sacrament of Baptism was administered. Fifty years later, the Diocese was canonically erected, starting with nine parishes and growing to an impressive 58. With 128 priests, 45 Sisters of Diocesan right, and 578 commissioned Catechists, the Diocese also boasts numerous Church-owned institutions, including schools, training colleges, and hospitals.

A Legacy of Faith, Growth, and Service

The celebrations in the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani reflect not only on its rich history but also on its commitment to faith, growth, and service. From its humble beginnings to becoming a thriving community with extensive educational and healthcare contributions, the diocese stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of mission and mercy. As the faithful rededicate themselves, the Diocese of Sunyani continues to build the Lord’s Church, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of those it touches.
