Mercy that heals the wounds of women

For women victims of violence, mercy can be the key that opens the doors of a wounded heart

On the International Day Against Violence Against Women, which falls each year on Nov. 25, there are many events to raise awareness of the issue and to remember those who are gone.

Events of all kinds and in multiple places around the world to say no to violence, to denounce a sad condition that has been perpetuated for years, if not centuries; in homes, in offices, in the streets.

Important occasions so that the cry of so many women – abused, beaten, raped – is no longer stifled by the silence of the fear of shame.

The key words of this Day are rightly “respect,” “denunciation,” “courage,” “solidarity,” but there is also a need for mercy.

Of that caress to the heart that heals wounds.

Fortunately, multiple networks and services are activated to give support to those who suffer daily beatings, bans, abuse, harsh words. Associations and anti-violence centers are available, even around the clock, to counter the problem.

However, a woman with broken bones and a broken life, with self-esteem at zero and serenity in the balance, needs first of all to be heard. To feel loved, considered again.

And it is mercy that simple feeling that will reach into her soul. It will extend a hand to her, give her a word of comfort, make her feel that she is not alone or even wrong.

For this reason, in a world where there is not only no mercy but even prejudice, reflecting on mercy can be a kind response.

The counterbalance in which, celebrating dignity and empathy together, the light of hope for a renewed existence can be kindled.

Where the other is not the monster who hurts you, but the neighbor who-with works and words-will make you believe in people’s humanity again.
