Luce, the Mascot of Jubilee 2025, pays a visit to Lucca
The presentation of “Light” at the “Lucca Comics & Games” marked a historic event for the Church
It is, in fact, the first time that a Vatican department officially collaborates with a cultural event of this kind.
The presence of the mascot at Lucca Comics & Games 2024 represents a symbolic and innovative initiative, through which the Church aims to connect with the world of youth using contemporary languages and iconography familiar to popular culture.
This initiative is set in the context of Jubilee 2025, an event that invites spiritual reflection, solidarity and inclusion.
“Light” is designed to embody core values such as hope and mercy, which form the heart of spiritual and corporal works of mercy.
Gestures such as “comforting the afflicted” or “feeding the hungry,” also promoted by spazio + spadoni, are repurposed as vital practices in modern culture.
Monsignor Rino Fisichella, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, stressed that the mascot not only spreads a message of fraternity, but invites young people to rediscover the value of inclusion and community responsibility.
The “Light & Friends” project also includes other characters that symbolize different aspects of the journey of faith and welcome, further enriching the symbolic and cultural experience.
Lucca, chosen as the presentation venue, is deeply connected to the tradition of pilgrimage due to its location along the Via Francigena.
This historic path to Rome represents not only a physical route, but also a symbol of reflection and solidarity.
Lucca Archbishop Paolo Giulietti highlighted how this choice reflects the Christian tradition of welcoming and pilgrimage, making the city a focal point for launching the Jubilee message.
The participation of “Luce” in Lucca Comics & Games was a great success, especially on social media. The mascot attracted thousands of interactions, with photos and videos shared that stimulated a cultural dialogue across religious barriers.
This brought together even those who do not normally attend church events, making the Jubilee’s message of peace and hope accessible to a wider audience.
Lucca Comics organizers expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, recognizing how “Luce” added a significant cultural and symbolic contribution to the event.
Through the use of modern visual language and traditional values, the mascot stood out as a bridge between the Church and young people. The initiative was not limited to an eye-catching visual narrative, but conveyed a universal message of empathy and responsibility.
Through “Light,” Jubilee 2025 aims to be a time of growth and renewal not only for the faithful, but for all who seek a more compassionate world.
The hope is that the enthusiasm generated by this mascot will inspire young people to actively participate in the Jubilee, reflecting on the values of inclusion and mercy, and helping to build a future of hope and solidarity.
