Today, mission space + spadoni publishes the letter sent to us from Genoa by Rosanna Spera, a professor of physics originally from Pompei
By Rosanna Spera
Hello to you who read me, dear brother.
I am writing to ask you to accept my request for mercy.
Mercy for the frailties of the people around you, those you meet every day and those with whom you share only a few moments.
The temptation to measure the dignity, the value of a person by his success, his merits, his virtues is great.
But not all of us can “live up” to the expectations around us, not all of us can find in ourselves the resources we need to give our best. We fail, we fall, we disappoint ourselves and those around us.
With this letter of mine, I ask you for mercy for the brother who has erred, who has let you down, who has let himself down, who has closed in on himself for fear of showing his vulnerability, who does not hope, who is not committed, who does not “believe” anymore.
Have mercy on those who struggle with their fears, their imperfections. Have mercy on his mistakes, his frailty, his vulnerability.
Make room for compassion, which enables us to share the other’s burden.
Accept imperfections, even your own, experience them as a gift, an opportunity to grow together.
Hold out your hand to the one who is in distress and allow him the freedom to accept it, and do not be disappointed if he decides to turn away.
Have mercy and leave your hand open for his.
Perhaps, one day, he will decide to take it and share, hand in hand, a piece of the road with you.
Wholeheartedly from an imperfect soul who dreams of a more merciful world.
