Kenya | Hope of care for mothers and children

Caring for the health of a frail person is perhaps the greatest act of love one can perform.
This is well known by the Capuchin Sisters of Mother Rubatto who, in the outskirts of the city of Nakuru, Kenya, safeguard the health of children at the Mother Rubatto Health Center.
“Our goal is to try to offer the poorest people a chance for medical care,” says Mother Loredana Tiraboschi, superior general.
“Our reality works especially in favor of maternity and childhood: every day we provide care to children who come to us with a variety of illnesses such as pneumonia, acute fevers, bacterial and respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, malaria, oral sores and severe dehydration.”
For the many poor people in the area, Mother Rubatto remains the only way to access health services, as the nearest government hospital is far away but, more importantly, very expensive.
“We try to offer people most in need services such as outpatient maternal and nutritional screenings, blood tests and HIV testing. We also have a pharmacy and a dental office. Finally, we also offer treatment to victims of traffic accidents or family violence.”
Many people have been treated, but there are still many needs for which the sisters ask for support:
“We are confident that with the help of so many people from the Friendly Heart, we will be able to continue in our work.”
