Jubilee, time to ensure social justice and heal inequality
On Vatican News, the Magis Foundation’s Appeal for the Holy Year to encourage the circulation of solidarity and help bridge the gap between rich and poor countries

The Jubilee will generate positive effects on the reduction of inequalities in the world. This is the appeal that comes from the Magis Foundation, a missionary work of the Euro-Mediterranean Province of the Jesuits (present in about 20 countries with about fifty projects in Latin America, Africa, Asia, and for some time now also in Europe, in Albania), whose president Ambrogio Bongiovanni is the spokesperson, who hopes for an opportune time to emphasize the urgency of ensuring social justice where this is not being done.
Appropriate time to redress imbalances
“In the current situation, even the Jubilee can highlight the contradictions that exist in our world, in the sense that there is a Jubilee of the rich and a Jubilee of the poor, of those who may have the resources to travel and those who instead live in extreme poverty on a daily basis,” Bongiovanni says in a statement released by the Foundation.
It emerges that the theme of this Holy Year, hope, cannot be separated from justice. “Being ‘pilgrims of hope,’” he continues, ”means that we must set justice in motion and therefore be agents of justice and peace.
Conflicts themselves should be stopped in order to allow for the return of justice; in other words, he further highlights, “the Jubilee is an opportune time that can help us live in awareness of the imbalance that exists worldwide.
And precisely because of its original biblical reference it should help us reflect on the theme of justice even beyond the glittering tourist-religious proposals.”
