Catholic Sisters: weaving communion and hope through communication
A recent global event, the “Jubilee of Religious Sisters” Conference, organized by the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, with the support of the Hilton Foundation (together they collaborate on the Pentecost Project) has highlighted the crucial role of Catholic nuns in the contemporary world.
This conference, held on January 22-23, brought together nuns involved in media and communication from around the world, with the aim of sharing experiences and approaches to communicating hope in today’s media landscape.
The Conference focused on the importance of communication and the power of personal testimonies.
Fifteen speakers (with a large female presence, 12 out of 15) gave engaging testimonies from disaster-stricken areas of Africa, Europe, or South East Asia, sharing their experiences and testimonies, which inspired other participants and demonstrated the importance of making their work known.
Nuns were encouraged to engage with contemporary media, including digital media, to spread the Gospel. A participant emphasized that nuns can be “unstoppable” in contributing to the spread of the Gospel through communication. She also stressed the importance of not underestimating traditional media, such as radio, which remains a crucial source of information in many parts of the world.
The conference was an opportunity for the nuns to feel inspired, encouraged, and empowered to continue sharing their stories, contribute to spreading the Gospel, and bring hope to the world. As Sister Mary Ann said, “Together, in communion, in participation, and with hope, we should continue to spread the goodness of Christ to all those we minister to in the world”.
