In 66,000 across the Mediterranean route migrants
According to the Unicef Report, more than 30 thousand migrants intercepted in Italy in 2024, including children and young people
In 2024, UNICEF intensified its mission of mercy in Italy, reaching over 30,000 migrant and refugee children, adolescents, and young people. This effort aligns with the broader context of works of mercy, inspired by the Gospel, guiding UNICEF’s actions in providing protection, psychological support, and integration opportunities to vulnerable minors.
According to UNICEF’s 2024 Annual Report for Europe and Central Asia, approximately 66,000 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy via the Central Mediterranean route, considered one of the most perilous. Of these, 20% were minors, including about 8,000 unaccompanied minors.
In response to this emergency, UNICEF directly assisted 24,000 minors, focusing on protection, mental health, and prevention of gender-based violence. It also supported 900 adolescents and young people through foster care and mentorship programs and facilitated access to language, digital, and transversal skills development pathways for 7,000 disadvantaged minors.
This commitment reflects the essence of Jubilee, a time of spiritual renewal and renewed dedication to works of mercy, inviting all to actively participate in building a more welcoming and supportive society.
