HIC SUM: Sister Christine’s response has the flavor of mercy

In a world marked by growing social inequalities, marginalized populations and urgent needs in terms of human dignity, the story of Sister Christine and her commitment to the HIC SUM project is inspiring

Strong in her religious vocation and deep desire to embody works of mercy, she has been able to transform simple gestures into actions that bring hope and dignity.

A sister of the Congregation “Sisters of the Good Council of Mbarara” through the HIC SUM project of spazio + spadoni, a bakery (MUHABUZI HIC SUM BAKERY) has been built in Uganda. It is a project that does not just produce bread, but has a much broader vision: to combine spirituality with practical action to make works of mercy tangible.

The choice of bread

The choice of bread making has a specific meaning. Bread is a universal food, a symbol of sharing, life and communion. Sister Christine gives a spiritual and social dimension to her action, because it is not only about feeding the body, but also about responding to a deeper hunger: that of dignity, solidarity and love.

A key aspect of the HIC SUM project is training. Realizing that empowerment is the key to escaping poverty and marginalization, she decided to pass on her baking skills to young people in Kabuyanda village and refugees in Nakivale camp. These classes are not just about learning techniques, but also help restore confidence and hope to people who are often excluded from society. It is a way to restore people’s dignity and sense of reciprocity in order to perform works of mercy.

In a rural setting where economic opportunities are scarce, this initiative aims to give many young people a chance to take charge of their lives. Making bread, doughnuts and cakes represents a source of income for them, but also a newfound sense of pride. For refugees in Nakivale camp, often threatened by food insecurity, this training is a light in the darkness, allowing them to rebuild their lives far from home.

The bread of mercy: a spiritual and practical work

Sister Christine’s mission does not end with baking or training. Together with volunteers, she brings the “bread of mercy” to a center for people with disabilities. This approach perfectly illustrates the dual vocation of spazio + spadoni projects: combining practical action and spirituality.

Distributing this bread is much more than an act of material charity. It is a way to remind often forgotten people that they are loved, that they are valuable, and that they have a place in the community. It is also a way to emphasize the goal of OPERA M: to empower everyone to do the works of mercy.

A spirituality rooted in action

What distinguishes the HIC SUM project is the way it integrates faith into every action and thus a spirituality that is not disconnected from daily life. On the contrary, it is rooted in concrete gestures that produce real change. It is a way to make God’s love tangible in a world often marked by indifference. Every loaf of bread produced is a manifestation of this love, every training course offered is a seed of hope, and every distribution is a gesture of communion.

Despite the great challenges she faces, such as lack of resources and logistical difficulties in remote areas like Kabuyanda and Nakivale, Sister Christine never gives up. Her example shows that even in the most difficult contexts, with determination and faith it is possible to bring about meaningful change. She is a role model for all those who wish to embody works of mercy in their lives, demonstrating that it is possible to combine social action with a spiritual dimension and that even the simplest gestures, such as baking bread, can have a profound impact.
