Hamas-Israel | Mercy will inspire peace

During the truce between Hamas and Israel, spazio + spadoni trusts and hopes in the mercy that can inspire Peace and give comfort through works

Mercy and truth will meet,
justice and peace shall kiss each other.”

So says Psalm 84, in verse 11.

This was the feeling or expectation following the Gaza news on TV on Sunday, January 19.

Through cameras pointed at a completely destroyed territory, we saw in so many faces the pieces of a torn existence.

People searching for their way or their home, who will have to rebuild their daily lives, picking up the pieces of a war that has lasted 471 days. The “Gaza War,” which began after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

A conflict that has left 46,913 dead and 110,750 wounded, 70 percent of whom are women and children, and that has been carried out regardless of Life among people’s homes.

On the first day of the “truce,” we saw the release of the three Israeli women – Romi Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher – who had been taken hostage by Hamas. And with them, the smiles, tears and hugs of family members.

The exchange will be with Palestinians held in Israeli jails, and the fighting will have to stop for 42 days.

Meanwhile, hundreds of trucks are entering the Gaza Strip, bringing water, hygiene kits, food and clothing: everything needed so that refreshment, support and comfort can be brought to an area dramatically affected by a very serious humanitarian emergency.

More than 90 percent of the population, in fact, is displaced and so far, due to the bombing, there has been a lack of access to food, water, electricity and medical care, with disastrous consequences.

From Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu comes the icy threat of “a temporary truce,” but spazio + spadoni wants to join all men and women of good will who, instead, pray and hope for peace, trusting in God’s mercy that can inspire forgiveness and making a concrete commitment to reconcile, unite, heal.

As Pope Francis said many years ago, “If all of us, if all peoples, individuals, families, neighborhoods, had this attitude, how much peace there would be in the world, how much peace in our hearts! Because mercy leads us to peace.”
