Guinea Bissau before and after Feb. 27
February 27, an important date for Guinea Bissau. A fidei donum from Verona in the diocese of Bafata, where he is administrator, tells us about it
(by Fr. Lucio Brentegani)
Feb. 27, 2025. This is the date some take as the last day of the term of the President of the Republic of Guinea Bissau. Others say the deadline is later. What will happen in Guinea Bissau the day after February 27?
I don’t think anyone knows but everyone has a kind of premonition.
In principle, this has nothing to do with religion; it is merely a political date. But in reality, we missionaries, priests, nuns, catechists, animators, Caritas agents, men and women of civil society, cannot stay out of this discussion because it invades us from all sides.
All the radio stations are talking about it. All the Facebook pages, on one side or the other, write about it, make direct, vídeo, even hurling insults and threats at each other.
Guinea Bissau is in a very hot phase these days, even though the weather is strangely “cold” (it is only 18º in the morning and always 30º and passing in the afternoon).
Also, total silence from the international community. No one is talking about Guinea Bissau. Not only in Europe and the West in general (we are used to it), but also the institutions that should do so by vocation: ECOWAS, African Union, United Nations.
Zero. Total silence.
We will see what the end of this month of February will be like….
The interesting thing is that March 1 will be the first day of Ramadan for Muslims and on March 5, 4 days later, Lent will begin. It will be a shared journey of fasting and seeking God’s forgiveness.
I believe this is not a coincidence but an indication from above.
Happy mission to all!
