Congo | Missionaries alongside people as rebels advance
In Congo DR, rebels from the M23 group advance toward the airport. In the city of Bukavu, missionaries are merciful presences
Amid the escalating instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the M23 group, supported by Rwanda, has intensified its offensive in South Kivu, aiming to capture the strategic Kavumu airport, located 30 km from Bukavu.
This airport is crucial for supplying the Congolese army, creating rising concerns among local authorities.
Despite the tensions, the city of Bukavu remains calm, with missionaries and local clergy continuing their mission of support for the community, practicing works of mercy, which become vital in times of war.
The violence has forced thousands of displaced people to seek refuge in precarious conditions, uncertain if they will ever return home. In this challenging situation, the announcement of a Jubilee of Mercy offers a symbol of hope.
The Church’s mission remains steadfast, bringing the Gospel of peace and consolation to a world marked by conflict and fear. The geopolitical situation is uncertain, but the faithful and missionaries continue to bear witness to hope, regardless of the challenges they face.
