Caring for the Planet
On the last day of the year, a thought for our Planet, with a testimony by Sister Anna Maria Gervasoni from Oceania
Dear friends,
in Simbo, unfortunately, there is something wrong. The island is slowly sinking into the sea.
I noticed it immediately upon arrival, seeing the pier completely submerged to the shore (while before it was only the part of the dock that remained underwater during high tide).
Even the path leading to the two coastal villages has now been obliterated by the sea, which has entered from the shore, and the pillars of the bridge connecting the two islands that form Simbo barely emerge from the sea, whereas before they were at least a meter out of the water.
Some residents told me that geologists who go to monitor the islands affected by earthquake and tsunami have confirmed the slow and gradual sinking of the island.
I noticed then that people are sinking with the island! In fact, they were all very quiet and sad: no longer the beautiful singing and laughter of when we were with them.
Evidently, they are worried about the matter, also because once again the famous International Bodies that happen to come to explore Simbo and ask people questions about their needs, have done absolutely nothing.
The only thing done….the two classrooms made by us.
The people are very discouraged and disappointed, many will have to leave their land because Simbo will get smaller and smaller, even if it doesn’t sink at some point.
But where to go? And what can those who remain do, without even the lumber to rebuild houses?
They are still living in tents…
