ASIA/BAHRAIN – The essential and vital role of women for the mission of the church

Manama (Agenzia Fides) – “Women are not only an integral part of our faith communities, but are also essential to the prosperity of our Church’s mission”

Bishop Aldo Berardi, O.SS.T., Apostolic Vicar of North Arabia, said this at the meeting on Discipleship and Women’s Participation in a Synodal Church in Mission. “These two days are meant to be a testimony of our commitment to ensure their full participation”-the bishop remarked at the opening of the two-day event held Nov. 29 and 30 at Our Lady of Arabia Cathedral in Awali and Sacred Heart Church in Manama.

The initiative was the brainchild of AVONA Women of the Apostolic Vicariate of North Arabia together with Bishop Berardi in favor of dialogue, education and initiatives that elevate the role of women in the Church. The program was met with enthusiastic participation and generated lively discussions on ways to further integrate women into decision-making processes and improve their visibility in Church doctrines and practices.

Among the speakers, Pascale Debbane, regional coordinator of the Listening and Dialogue Section – Middle East, spoke about the broader vision of the Synod Church and the significant role women play in shaping the mission and leadership of the Church.

Giving women a voice within the Church and inspiring their active participation in church missions was among the goals of this meeting, which also included Fr. Joseph Savarimuthu, who along with Debbane is part of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Human Development, and Sister Milagros Sandoval of the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit (SSpS) from the Philippines.

“In these times of darkness, division and conflict in all forms in society, AVONA Women’s program is light and hope for people, especially the women of AVONA. I am grateful to have interacted with them,” said Sister Milagros sharing a spiritual and missionary perspective of her work in the Philippines.

The success of this initiative marks a significant step toward full recognition of the essential and vital contribution of women in missionary work.
