A recent airstrike on the market in Tora, Northern Darfur, has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, raising international concern. According to the Emergency Lawyers Group, a collective of Sudanese lawyers documenting human rights violations, the attack was carried out by the Sudanese armed forces and constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law, amounting to a war crime under the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

This tragic event highlights the urgency of responding to the Gospel’s call, which invites us to perform works of mercy towards those in need. In a time when Sudan is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, it is crucial for the international community to come together to assist those who are suffering. The mission of humanitarian organizations and local churches is essential in alleviating suffering and promoting peace in a region ravaged by violence.

During this Jubilee period, we are called to reflect on our commitment to solidarity and aid to the most vulnerable. It is through concrete acts of help and support that we can embody Christian values and bring hope to those affected by this tragedy.

Mercy must be at the heart of our actions, so that the light of the Gospel can shine even in the darkest places.
