Spazio + spadoni joins in mourning the loss of Mamma Carla, remembering her as an extraordinary woman who embodied the spirit of the Works of Mercy. Her example is an invitation to continue on the path of love for others, inspiring new generations to build a more just world.

The diocese of Lucca mourns the loss of Carla Frediani, known to all as “Mamma Carla.”

Born in 1935, Carla was a lay missionary in Rwanda for more than 40 years, from 1970 to 2013.

With a slender physique and immense inner strength, she faced distant and unknown lands, without knowing the language and with limited resources, dedicating herself to those who needed it most.

Her mission was to restore dignity to the poor: she opened dispensaries and nutrition centers, offering care, counseling and a hot meal to thousands of mothers and children.

In a context marked by severe malnutrition, Carla fought to save lives, treating children with Kwashiorkor and supporting families in desperate conditions.

In addition to health, Carla has promoted education as a tool for social redemption, offering scholarships to young girls and boys. In recent years she has established a network of preschools, easing the burden on mothers and enabling them to contribute to family livelihood.

His commitment did not stop even during the darkest periods of the war in Rwanda.

Her tireless presence has been a beacon of hope for thousands of people.

In Italy, too, Carla left an indelible mark.

In the diocese of Lucca and surrounding communities, numerous groups supporting her mission have sprung up, some of which have
turned into stable associations. Through outreach, they continued to promote the values of solidarity and global justice.

Carla Frediani was not only a missionary, but a symbol of hope and rebirth.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her or to be touched by her extraordinary work.
